MOGADISHU, Somalia: Masked fighters occupied a key business district and residential neighborhood in the Somali capital Saturday, saying they had forced Ethiopian troops to withdraw and urging locals to return home.

General Boykin's Christmas Vacation - There are still more questions than answers regarding American involvement in Ethiopia's invasion of Somalia. What did you do over your Christmas break? Me, I did nothing. But the government of Ethiopia, the only Christian regime in the Horn of Africa, did something a bit unusual -- it conquered Somalia and began an occupation of the capital, Mogadishu.

While most of the World is paying attention to the Mission to Ethiopia currently be undertaken by Secretary of State Rice there is another mission underway that will just as much impact. This other mission which also deals with potential Peace and Security Issues has not garnered the Press of the Rice Mission. This Mission is being led by the current Secretary of Defense Robert Gates.

Her face placid under a black headscarf, Kadro Mohamed sits on the floor of her new home: a tiny shack constructed of sticks and shredded bags. She cradles a restless baby, while her other seven children huddle nearby. Several weeks earlier, her husband was killed when their home in Mogadishu was destroyed by a random mortar, fired during a battle between the Ethiopian troops that occupy Somalia and the rebels who are trying to drive them out.

The violence and instability currently taking place is a major threat to the region as it may offer the possibility of al-Qaeda gaining a safe haven in Somalia.
