ImageAssab, 8 April 2008 - As part of efforts to promote equitable social services in all corners of the country, the Southern Red Sea region, especially the town of Assab and its surroundings, has acquired access to mobile phone service, according to Mr. Tesfasilassie Berhane, Managing Director of Eri-Tel.

He indicated that 16 new towers along with the necessary communication equipments have been installed. Mr. Tesfasilassie noted that the most areas of the region now have access to mobile service and those that do not yet have access to the service would soon get it. He expressed appreciation to the parties that took active participation in the undertaking, including the Mussa Ali and Gedem construction companies, Sembel Wood and Metal Work and employees of Eri-Tel itself.

Besides the introduction of mobile phones, Eri-Tel has already distributed wireless telephone service in the region and it will commence service in the near future, the Managing Director added. Mr. Tesfasilassie further indicated that the existing 21 public phones have been replaced with new ones and that another 20 additional telephone booths have been installed in Assab.

Moreover, reports indicated that the majority of the country’s islands, especially Dahlak Island, have become beneficiaries of the newly introduced mobile phone service thanks to the collaboration of the Electricity Corporation.

There are over 90,000 mobile phone service customers in the country and more than 1.2 million calls are made daily, according to reports
