ImageWar Against Eritrea—If Difficult Yesterday, Impossible Today
Driven by expansionist dreams, the TPLF regime’s war of aggression against Eritrea was the most critical in a series of strategic mistakes that are expediting the regime’s downfall.

Expansionism and invasion are not part of modern and civilized politics but that of an outdated, power-driven and adventurous political philosophy. Fortunately, history has time and again proven that power philosophy and adventurism can never stifle the voice of truth. The history of previous Ethiopian regimes is also clear proof of the above fact. Emperor Haile Selassie’s attempt to forcibly make Eritrea part of Ethiopia not only resulted in a grave humanitarian and economic crisis but also became the main reason for the Emperor’s downfall.

The succeeding military regime of the Derg also gambled with the lives and resources of the Ethiopian people in the war against Eritrea and collapsed in the end without any success. In a book title ‘Oromay,’ a renowned Ethiopian writer, Bealu Girma, had tried to caution Ethiopian leaders that war with Eritrea is an impossible task that would only entail grave consequences for Ethiopia. Unfortunately, the author’s counsel became the cause for this death, which was soon followed by the Derg’s own demise.

In a regrettable turn of events, following the two futile attempts of the previous regimes, the TPLF clique came to power with its own devious and impractical designs against Eritrea. Chronically afflicted with expansionist aspirations, this minority clique set about in realizing its dream of establishing a greater Tigray republic soon after assuming power at the expense of the sacrifices of the Tigrayan people as well as other Ethiopian nationalities. To this end, the regime snatched territories from the Wolo, Gondar and Afar regions and waged a war of aggression against Eritrea in a bid to provide its dream republic with seaports. However, just as it predecessors, by waging a war of aggression against Eritrea the TPLF regime was itself plunged into an inescapable quagmire.

The TPLF clique had two main objective in the 1998-2000 war between Eritrea and Ethiopia that resulted in colossal human and material loss and subjected the whole region to grave turmoil. The regime’s first objective was to accomplish the task its predecessors found impossible, i.e. to secure the long coveted access to the sea by defeating and persecuting the Eritrean people, and thereby acquire a champion’s status in the eyes of the Ethiopian people. The second and most important objective was to make the necessary preparations towards realizing the regime’s long-term vision of establishing the dream of the Tigray republic at the expense of the lives and resources of the Ethiopian people.

At the time when the TPLF began to provoke aggression against Eritrea using Badme as a pretext, the regime more than any other party knew that according to the colonial treaty border of 1900, 1902 and 1908 Badme is an integral part of Eritrean sovereign territory. Nonetheless, believing that power philosophy can suppress the truth and turn dreams into reality, the regime sought to realize its wild dream by inventing fictitious accusations. However, in facing Eritrea in the battlefield, the regime was not only defeated but was also exposed before the world as a deceitful, oppressive and criminal political clique. As a result of this defeat, the Ethiopian people’s halfhearted acceptance of the TPLF clique turned into full blown opposition, forcing the regime to flee forward towards a cliff.

Fully aware that war with Eritrea has always been to Ethiopia’s detriment, the TPLF regime should not have even attempted it in the first place. Yet, blinded by futile dreams and chronic greed, the regime sought to accomplish the impossible and in the process subjected the Ethiopian people to chaos and destruction. Hence, the Ethiopian people and their political forces should clearly understand and realize that war against Eritrea is a task that should not even be attempted because if war against Eritrea was difficult yesterday, it is impossible today!
