As we all know, September 1, 1961 marks the spark that galvanized the people of Eritrea to pick up arms to re-claim what has been denied to them forcibly for the National Independence.
On this day, the 46th anniversary, Eritreans in the Los Angeles and the vicinity commemorate the valor of those who were first to sacrifice their lives towards national independence and still fighting to keep the freedom for generation come with dignity and prosperity .Yes, on this day, Eritreans from all walks of life flocked in droves and an armed liberation front was born.
About 200 Eritrean Americans attended an event marking the 46th anniversary of Bahti Meskerem in Los Angeles, California (USA) on Saturday, September 22, 2007.
To start the report on the ceremony for the Bahti Meskerem that was held in Los Angeles, simply can be described as the article put it on shabait.com entitled “Spirit and Journey of Bahti Meskerem always on track no matter any conspiracy”.
The main highlights of the event, which opened with the traditional observance of a minute of silence honoring Eritrean martyrs and the singing of the national anthem, included a brief statement by a representative of the organizing committee underlining the historic significance of Bahti Meskerem and the reading of poems in Tigrinya and English befitting the occasion.
The celebration coincided with the launching of a petition campaign aimed at urging the US State of Department to reverse its decision to close the Eritrean Consulate in Oakland, California, desist from putting Eritrea on the "State Sponsor of Terrorism" list and play a positive role in expediting the demarcation of the border between Eritrea and Ethiopia.
Several participants made passionate remarks in support of the petition campaign and emphasized both the urgency and need for a united stance and several others volunteered to help with the campaign. The message from the attendees on the ceremony was that, the Eritrean people are as always dedicated and advocated for peace and freedom to their beloved country “Eritrea” and peace for the horn of Africa as well.
One the of highlight on the evening was also the cultural live music and dancing by the famous Eritrean star, Dashim Mesgina, accompanied by keyboard player, Mehari Eyasu, entertained the enthusiastic gathering with his old and new musical hits. Los Angeles-based singer, Habtom Debessay, too sang a song. The ceremony was ended, and scheduled for up coming meeting with the volunteers to help the petition campaign ongoing.
