Dear Congressman Payne,Please accept my thanks and appreciations for the impartial and exemplary role you have been taking vis-à-vis the thorny and unfortunate situation of the Horn of Africa region in general and the Eritrea Ethiopia issue in particular. Your Excellency, it is perhaps with the type of courageous people like you that America would shine in spite of some of the perplexing and disastrous adventures our Government seems to have been following when it comes to foreign policy especially the one directed towards the Third World. I am sending this letter to express my appreciation to you, Sir, for speaking your consciousness and standing for the truth. I do not want to unduly take your time and bore you with many fallacies the Bush Administration has been following lately. But, I must tell you that I was absolutely amazed how this lady in the State Department, DR. Jendayi E. Frazer, the Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, can twist the truth in broad day light. In her latest testimony before the Foreign Affairs Committee, where you serve as Chairman of the Subcommittee on Africa; and when you correctly asked her why she was working to place Eritrea on the list of states that sponsor terrorism and NOT Ethiopia, she stated that Eritrea supports terrorist groups while Ethiopia DOES NOT! Sir, you know that is preposterous allegations for which the good doctor could not provide a shred of evidence. Nothing could be further from the truth. What about the “Eritrean Jihad” murderous thugs that Ethiopia supports under the umbrella of the so called “Eritrean Democratic Alliance” and whose office is located none other than in Addis Ababa? The Assistant Secretary of State may have her preferences and friends in the regime that rules Ethiopia by the barrel of the gun and she can hate Eritrea as much as her heart desires. But that should not be at US tax payers’ expenses. She should know that arrogance does not go with sound diplomacy. I am convinced that Dr. Frazer may have some ulterior motives to drive her so blindly as to dare and accuse Eritrea of all the mischief she could think of and almost totally downplay the many positive and proven things Eritrea has been successfully achieving. The records speak for themselves that Eritrea is in the forefront for steadfastly standing against terrorism. Why does Eritrea do that? Eritrea is not doing this to appease anybody or to gain the sympathy of any group. It is doing and will continue to do it come what may because, firstly, it was and is a victim of such hideous doctrine and, more importantly, it believes that it is the right thing to do. Now, is that such a revelation that is difficult to comprehend? Not really, unless one has a preconceived notion that was spoon fed from sources who are known to speak with forked tongues and whose credibility value is non existent. Best regards, Berhane Alazar |
