ImageI am sure everybody is pleased to see that Jendayi E. Frazer’s lies were exposed on the front of members of US committee on Foreign Affairs of Africa. They have questioned her ‘credibility’ on a variety of issues including her ‘blind-support’ of Meles Zenawi’s regime. From that scenario, anyone can understand that she is incompetent to represent the US policy on African affairs in general, and on Horn Africa in particular. She was an architect of Ethiopian invasion of Somalia. And her effort, to stabilize the Horn of Africa and particularly Somalia, has been a complete failure. The simple reason is that her strategy was based on partisan policy. No military surge, no matter how brilliantly performed, can succeed without political reconciliation and a surge of diplomacy in Somalia as well as in Horn of Africa.

No matter how often the United States or its allies capture or intend to capture a top Al-Qaeda leader a new one can emerge, if the US continues to sympathize with small portion of leaders or groups rather than with the issues of the ordinary people in the region. For instance, everyday, the Somali population is victimized by the hands of Ethiopian soldiers. The number of people who have died in Somalia due to the US bombings and cold-blooded killings by Ethiopian soldiers is far greater than it happened in the short period of the Islamic Courts.

After failing to find a single Eritrean soldier in side Somalia, Jenday Frazer and Meles Zenawi has been desperate to establish an Al-Qaeda links between Eritrea and Islamic Court. So far so good, they failed to show a concrete evidence to justify their allegation against Eritrea as a supporter of terrorism.

The question is whether Jenday Frazer can learn from her mistakes? The one area of concern is: does the Bush administration realize who are America’s real enemies and real friends before it is too late?

The problem can be obverted if the State Department engaged genuinely in the Horn of Africa. In order to sustain its reputation as nation that advocates for democracy, peace and prosperity, the US government in general and the State Department in particular, should stop its partisan policy in the Horn of Africa. The war on terror should not be plagued by politics or regional partisan policy.

On its war on terror, the US needs a nation like Eritrea as key partner. With its extensive experience in fighting terrorism, Eritrea can contribute a great deal for America’s campaign for eradicating terror threat in the region.

Success stories are not easy to come by in fighting a threat of terror of our times, Eritrea, however, has achieved this. This is all the more remarkable as Eritrea has a relatively short period since its independence.
