United Nations, Oct 12 (Prensa Latina) UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon expressed great concern at escalating tensions between Ethiopia and Eritrea, and called the two countries to exercise "utmost restraint" and comply with the Algiers Agreements.
In a statement issued here, Ban called the two countries to preserve the integrity of the Temporary Security Zone (TSZ) and facilitate the implementation of the decision of the Eritrea-Ethiopia Boundary Commission (EEBC) regarding the demarcation of their border. The secretary general referred to "recent shooting incidents, as well as the building up of military forces in the border area." The two countries engaged in a war from 1998 to 2000, during which time at least 60,000 people were killed. They signed a peace agreement in Algeria, by virtue of which the TSZ was established and the EEBC was set up. However, Ethiopia, which must transfer the town of Badme to Eritrea, has not honored the decisions made by that specialized group. In response to Ethiopia's decision, Eritrea has limited the movement of UN forces and their work in general, claiming that the UN has not taken severe measures to force Addis Ababa comply with the agreement. ef jg ir PL-12

Letter dated Nov. 30'07 from the Legal Adviser to the President of Eritrea to the president of the UNSC
From `legal nonsense to `legal fiction.

With effect from midnight tonight (30.11.2007), the demarcation of Ethio-Eritrean boundary will be as complete as any demarcated interstate boundary would be, if not better defined.
