This is in response to Amanuel Sahle's article dealing with the nature of poets. Please see "Eritrea profile" dated October 13, 2007. I realize that Ato Amanuel Sahle as a skillful writer seems to be a good poet too. For his style of writing sounds poetic presented in a narrative form. It is only short of stanza attributed to aesthetic structure of poetry. with this in mind, I believe that Ato Amanuel is cognizant of other traits associated with poets and poetesses as well.
Poets are diverse as long as their styles and tones of messages are concerned. Over the years, some poets have shared with me privately their works written in depressed mood or with guilty, but I have responded them with empathy. For the ability to express ones self by way of writing is therapeutic or self-treatment in a society such as ours which is affected by trauma of war and insecurity. Thus the craft of writing like dance therapy is one of effective methods in psychotherapy (mind treatment). Don't we get a relief by dancing or singing? Does this suggest that we are lunatic too? Not necessarily. We have different ways to deal or express our pent up feelings. The question is are they destructive such as substance abuse or constructive as creative writing per se? All in all, let me share with you what poets and poetesses are meant to me from the perspective of my reading and personal encounter. POETS AND POETESSES ARE Poets are social rebels For they are fearless To speak their minds On behalf of their kind. Poets are like innocent child Who speaks what comes To his mind. If not...... They write what they feel Not what they think As stoic people. Poets are visionary For they can see What others cannot see. Poets have four eyes In the world of superficiality And utter lies. Poets are mirrors Who reflect The very intents Of those who control. Poets are the souls Who keep alive The spirit of folks. Poets are saints Who are not attracted By worldly things. Poets are in a depressed mood For they are Sometimes misunderstood. Poets are compassionate As they are tempered By tragic fates. Poets love words In their melodic tunes And use them as tools In composing a poem Full of grace and beauty Like that.... A bouquet of flowers Of tender and radiant SPRING...
