Our forefather believed all along that one’s wisdom in dealing with problems would have a determining effect on its outcome. In other words, a farsighted person who looks at and deals with issues with broadmindedness and make decisions based on his/her past experiences is more likely to come out victorious.
Accordingly, one who possesses a little faith and a great deal of wisdom has no difficulty in overcoming obstacles which may come his way.
Eritrea’s history reveals that our heroic forefathers, despite limited education, were rich in wisdom. They protested strongly against foreign occupation. They defied international pressure to annex Eritrea and vowed to fight to achieve their freedom. Thanks to the courage and wisdom of our forefathers and the sacrifice of thousands of Martyrs, Eritrea is an independent and respected member of the United Nations on the verge of making history.
Of course, as few rotten apples are bound to spoil a basketful of good ones, Eritrea is not immune from a few selfish “Intellects” and opportunists who tried in the past and won’t hesitate to sell their nation to the highest bidder. These individuals, some of whom claim to hold PhDs from prestigious western universities, can recite a multi-hundred page book on democracy and constitution but lack the basic common sense and wisdom.
They attempt to impose on people their seemingly “rosy” democratic agenda without giving any suggestion on how to deal with the very immediate threat people are faced with-a threat they refuse to acknowledge and dismiss as insignificant. I read somewhere that opportunists usually like to live in a Twilight Zone where life is so unpredictable; they seek for loopholes through which they can sneak in to do the most damage. For these few spineless individuals, peace and stability in any region is against their selfish principle. They flourish where there is war and chaos. When many genuine Eritrean nationals, either as a group or as individuals, were protesting against the silence of the international community for failing to bring an end to the Eri-Ethiopia border issue, these self acclaimed” intellectual” Eritreans were busy demonizing the government and undermining the works of Warsay-Ykaalo” campaign. To them, the no war no peace situation the region finds itself is like a Twilight Zone. Ironically, these same individuals have the audacity and the nerve to claim that they work to fulfill the wishes and aspirations of the people.
As is said time and again, no nation is perfect. This is true especially, when one has to deal with both natural and manmade obstacles. There is no question that Eritrea is going through some challenging times. At the same time, this young nation, despite the shortcomings, is also making miracles for those who want to see it with open eyes and open mind.
Peace to Us All !! Amanuel Tseggai
