GAROWE, Somalia Oct 16 (Garowe Online) - The situation in the disputed northern Somali town of Las Anod was reportedly calm Tuesday, even though residents feared the outbreak of warfare after armed clashes killed 10 people yesterday.
Politicians and military officers from the breakaway Somali region of Somaliland are inside Las Anod, capital of Sool region, where they have held talks with clan elders and local leaders, sources said. The bulk of Somaliland troops and their armored vehicles passed Las Anod towards the direction of Garowe, capital of the semiautonomous Puntland region. Somaliland army officers claimed they captured more than 20 Puntland soldiers and five armored trucks known locally as "technicals." Such claims were difficult to verify. Armed truck Somaliland, which seeks independence from Somalia, claims Sool as part of the ex-British Protectorate of Somaliland. The breakaway region's defense minister, Abdullahi Ali Ibrahim, warned earlier this month that Somaliland will close its borders, "by peace or war." In Garowe, Puntland President Mohamud "Adde" Muse warned today that Puntland would use "all resources" to defend against Somaliland aggression. Abdirahman Bangah, Puntland's information minister, said in a press statement that 9 Puntland soldiers were killed, 27 wounded and 4 armored trucks captured. He said the Somaliland force "lost many soldiers" and had 6 of their armored trucks burned. President Muse told the press conference in his Garowe office that "foreign groups" are supporting Somaliland in its war against the Puntland regions, including a Somali opposition group based in Eritrea. He described the war as part of allied efforts to destabilize the Somali transitional government in Mogadishu, headed by former Puntland leader Abdullahi Yusuf. Somaliland officials have repeatedly denied links with Mogadishu-based insurgent groups waging war against Yusuf's Ethiopian-backed federal government. It's not clear what role the Ethiopian government is playing in the Somaliland-Puntland build up to full-scale war. However, Addis Ababa enjoys good relations with both regional governments. Sources in Las Anod said yesterday's battle erupted after Puntland Vice President Hassan Dahir Afqura ordered the arrest of Ahmed Abdi Habsade. Puntland police came to Habsade's home where they met stiff resistance from armed guards protecting the home, witnesses said. Clan militias loyal to Habsade rushed to the home and fought the police, who were eventually chased away. Our sources could not confirm whether or not Habsade was at home when the attack took place. Habsade, a former Puntland security minister, was last reported to have reached the town of Oog, which serves as a major military base for Somaliland forces. |

Letter dated Nov. 30'07 from the Legal Adviser to the President of Eritrea to the president of the UNSC
From `legal nonsense to `legal fiction.

With effect from midnight tonight (30.11.2007), the demarcation of Ethio-Eritrean boundary will be as complete as any demarcated interstate boundary would be, if not better defined.
