MOGADISHU, Somalia Oct 23 (Garowe Online) - African Union peacekeepers from Uganda currently serving in the Somali capital Mogadishu took control of overall security of the city's main jail yesterday.
Capt. Paddy Ankunda, the AU spokesman in Mogadishu, told the press Tuesday that the peacekeepers assumed control of the central jail and surrounding roads after intelligence reports of an imminent attack.
Capt. Ankunda would not detail the specifics of the planned attack, but Islamic rebels have been waging guerrilla warfare against Somalia's transitional government since January.
The timing of the AU takeover of Mogadishu's central jail coincides with an ongoing political feud between President Abdullahi Yusuf and Prime Minister Ali Mohamed Gedi.
President Yusuf today issued a decree officially revoking Supreme Court Chief Justice Yusuf Ali Harun of his post. Harun was jailed in September on corruption allegations on the orders of Attorney-General Abdullahi Dahir Barre, a close associate of Yusuf.
Harun, along with countless suspected insurgents and other political prisoners, is incarcerated at the Mogadishu central jail.
Yesterday, Mogadishu Mayor Mohamed "Dheere" Omar issued a statement calling on authorities to either bring prisoners to court within 48 hours or to release them.
Observers say Mayor Dheere's declaration is in line with Prime Minister Gedi, who has called the Harun arrest "illegal" and demanded his unconditional release.
Mogadishu residents are weary that a third front of violence, after the insurgency and common criminality, might erupt in the Somali capital between Yusuf and Gedi loyalists.
Somalia's interim parliament, meeting in the southwestern town of Baidoa, is attempting to constitutionally resolve the Yusuf-Gedi dispute.
But some 80 MPs walked out of parliament yesterday as the majority of lawmakers expressed support for bringing up a vote of confidence motion against Gedi.
Meanwhile, insurgent explosions today killed 3 soldiers in two separate incidents. Several civilians were wounded in subsequent gunfire.
