MOGADISHU, Somalia Oct 23 (Garowe Online) - Somalia's largest deepwater port came under heavy mortar fire Tuesday evening as Islamist insurgents stepped up their war against the government and its allies.
Three Ugandan soldiers and one Somali policeman were wounded in the attack, Capt. Paddy Ankunda told Ugandan press. Uganda is the only country to send soldiers to Somalia under the auspices of an African Union peacekeeping mission. The AU forces are based at Mogadishu port where they help secure the delivery of humanitarian aid. Witnesses and port employees said at least 6 mortar shells slammed into parts of the airport. Other mortars hit surrounding neighborhoods. Two civilians, a mother and her daughter, died inside their home when a shell rammed into the roof. Medical contacts at three Mogadishu hospitals said six people were admitted overnight with wounds. Meanwhile, more Somali troops joined their comrades at the Mogadishu port after Mogadishu Mayor Mohamed "Dheere" Omar demanded yesterday that government troops return to their barracks. Mayor Dheere made the comment while addressing the fate of prisoners locked inside Mogadishu's central prison, including deposed Supreme Court Chief Justice Yusuf Ali Harun. Dheere said the prisoners should either be brought to court within 48 hours and charged with a crime, or released altogether. The AU peacekeeping mission, that safeguards the port, has not commented on the Somali troops surrounding the vicinity of the port or the new reinforcements. Heavily armed soldiers backed by armored vehicles were visible around the port throughout the day, our correspondent reported. A spokesman for the soldiers said they are Somali federal troops based in neighboring Lower Shabelle region who came to Mogadishu to reinforce the security effort. Somali commanders would not comment on this developing story. |

From `legal nonsense´ to `legal fiction´.

With effect from midnight tonight (30.11.2007), the demarcation of Ethio-Eritrean boundary will be as complete as any demarcated interstate boundary would be, if not better defined.
