War with Weyane in a few days, a week or so? Hard to believe when considering how peaceful and calm Asmara is. No one talks about war, no one even seems to be preparing for war, so it is almost surreal to think it is so close. Our leaders have made it clear that this time weyane is going to be finished once and for all, something to cheer the heart, though who in their right mind would really look forward to another war.
Is it going to be de ja vu 1991, with Eritrean tanks barrelling towards Addis Ababa, cheered on by a weyane hating Tigrayan people? Meles could be on a US plane on his way to his blood soaked millions in the UK within a week of this war breaking out if his military is in as weak a condition as many of us suspect. It is a bit strange that we havent heard of any Ethiopian troops defecting to Eritrea for some months now, but weyanes army is voting with its feet in Somalia with a lot of desertions and many drownings of desperate Ethiopian soldiers trying to escape to Yemen by boat.
The timing for this war would seem to be on Eritreas side, for the US is tied up in a Turkey-Iraqi Kurd crisis, the war in afghanistan is being lost along with the ongoing debacle in Iraq. Apparently the US military has told the Bush crazies that attacking Iran is out of the question, and the US military is the one branch of the US government that has been friendly towards Eritrea these past few years, so the US bombing Eritrea in a desperate attempt to stop the end of the Meles regime seems a remote possibility.
On top of this, the US House of Representatives just passed a fast track, unanimous piece of paper condemning the Meles regime, with even Bushes most rabid supporters in the House voting in favor, another factor in Eritreas favor. So what will save Meles this time?
Hopefully nothing, and Peace will return to the Horn of Dilemma for the USA, finally?
Like I said, looking around Asmara, war seems far away and only a remote idea, for the streets are quiet and peaceful as they always are on a Saturday afternoon, before the saturday night street life takes hold and life and breath bubble on Asmaras pavements.
War maybe imminent but i will be hard to believe until it actually starts. And then, hopefully, it will be short, meles will be gone, and the USA will be left to rant and rave, and ultimately, do nothing they havent already done. Sanctions? We are already under sanctions, unofficial though they maybe. So until what will be will be,
