Sudan's neighbours support for efforts to realize peace in Darfur

Sudan's neighbouring countries Egypt, Eritrea, Chad and Libya will render their support for all efforts to realise comprehensive peace in the restive Sudanese western region Darfur in order to rebuild and develop it, Egypt's official MENA news agency reported Saturday.

The four countries made the joint stance in a statement to be issued later in the day ahead of the resumed negotiations between the Sudanese government and Darfur regional rebel groups, MENA said.

The conflicting Sudanese factions will kick off their peace talks on Saturday in Libya's coastal city of Sirte under the co-chairmanship of the envoys of the United Nations and the African Union (AU), Jan Eliasson and Salim Ahmed Salim.

The statement by Sudan's neighbouring countries, concerned with following the Darfur crisis, urges all Sudanese parties concerned to attend the Sirte conference in order to reach a just and comprehensive political solution that would swiftly alleviate the suffering of the Darfuris.

It lauds the efforts exerted by the United Nations and the African Union in settling the Sudanese political stalemate, calling for halting hostilities to render the peace talks successful.

According to MENA, officials from Egypt, Libya, Chad and Eritrea held a meeting on Friday night in Sirte and stressed the importance that all factions came to Libya talks to avoid a stalemate.

The peace process should be comprehensive, with all factions taking part and agreeing on a ceasefire, Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul-Gheit was quoted as saying.
