ImageIt's been a couple of weeks now since the 3rd annual YPFDJ North-America conference. I didn?t want to write about it immediately, as there were a great many things that I needed time to reflect upon. This year?s conference has, in my opinion, made steps in the right direction for our movement. Some of the items that made it more effective will be discussed in this brief.

My first observation was how well the Conference made use of the English and Tigrigna languages simultaneously. In an ideal world we would all be born with flawless proficiency in Tigrigna and Arabic however, this has not been the case for many years. One can only speculate how much valuable information is lost between the communicator and the recipient when language becomes a barrier to understanding. As a result, the changes made have helped a great number of youth understand the lecture content.

As a positive side note, I am strongly encouraged by the amount of youth who have shown interest in improving their language skills. Perhaps we are slowly moving towards a conference where everyone will be able to learn and express themselves in our native tongue. In order for this to happen though, the YPFDJ must submit a language training strategy for the entire continent. A comprehensive strategy that includes educational material and lesson guides could help strengthen the bonds of an entire new generation of patriots.

Furthermore, the lecture content was perhaps the most effective element of this year?s conference. Simply put, the content was both academically stimulating and remarkably insightful. But more than simply being a lecture, the exercise was interactive and dynamic.

Finally, the setting of our conference helped us make great strides towards achieving the YPFDJ objectives. Being surrounded by nature is by default very serene and relaxing. As a result delegates could learn and interact more freely. For one weekend we were surrounded by Eritreans in all directions, it was as though we were back home for a conference (minus the wet Canadian weather, of course).

Generally speaking I think the YPFDJ is well on its way to becoming a vital organ in the fight to develop a viable and sustainable Eritrea. If our rank-and-file continue to grow I can only imagine what this conscious movement is capable of accomplishing.

I look forward to seeing everyone again next year!
