Washington, D.C. (AHN) - The USS Porter (DDG-78), an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, has sank two pirate vessels off the coast of Somalia.
According to the U.S. Navy, the USS Porter responded to a distress call from a merchant vessel under attack from two pirate skiffs in international waters. The destroyer, on loan to an international task force aimed at stopping piracy and terror in the region, responded with deadly force, sinking both vessels. The U.S. has been closely monitoring the Somali coast, as it has become a hot spot for narcotics trafficking and piracy. The USS Porter, "Freedom's Champion," was commissioned in 1999. With a crew of 337 officers and enlisted men, the USS Porter is a guided missile destroyer, built around the Aegis combat system and the SPY-1D multi-function phased array radar. |
