Among the great gains we have registered in the nation-building process, the most significant achievement is certainly our determination to avoid dependence and rely only on hard work and internal resources to realize our goals. In trying to destroy us through strangling our economy, our enemies and their collaborators have unwittingly provoked stronger convictions of self-reliance, greater resourcefulness and productivity in the country. This has in turn added a strong impetus to our development endeavors, the evidence of which could be witnessed in every corner of the country. Particularly in the agricultural sector, we have been able to obtain ample harvest this year thanks to our hard work and dedication, and due to this year's abundant rains. Still, despite intense efforts, this year's harvest would not have been this plentiful had nature not cooperated. Hence, it is important to note that there still remains a lot to be done so as to upgrade our agricultural sector to a stage where it would not be so easily influenced by rains. Stepping up the ongoing efforts to develop agricultural infrastructure for soil and water conservation, developing irrigation systems, transforming agricultural work from manual labor to mechanical, outlining plans with which the production of livestock and strategic crops could be enhanced, introducing crops and fertilizers that enhance the productivity of the soil, developing better storage mechanisms, processing and marketing agricultural products, etc. are some of the efforts needed in order to secure abundant and sustainable agricultural output. As was indicated at the recent meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers, the priority task at this stage is to make the necessary preparations so as to collect every bit of this year's harvest into the national granary. Moreover, it would require the careful and efficient management of the collected harvest to replace the expensive food stuffs imported with hard currency. Consequently, if the hard earned harvest is not made to replace imported grains then no tangible gain would be scored in the national economy. Thus, utmost care should be taken for this year's harvest to provide relief from food importation, and to particularly provide a reprieve from the vast expenditures being made to acquire wheat grain. Furthermore, continuous efforts are still required for the harvest to induce the establishment of a large scale agro-industry and stimulate enhanced production of other domestic products such as fish and other marine resources, livestock, fruits and vegetables. Thus we can create an environment in which the nation-building process could be accelerated by saving hard currency from food import and using it for other development needs. |

Letter dated Nov. 30'07 from the Legal Adviser to the President of Eritrea to the president of the UNSC
From `legal nonsense to `legal fiction.

With effect from midnight tonight (30.11.2007), the demarcation of Ethio-Eritrean boundary will be as complete as any demarcated interstate boundary would be, if not better defined.
