Up to 90,000 people have fled Somalia's capital Mogadishu in the past few days in the wake of intense fighting between Ethiopian backed Somali forces and Islamic insurgents.

The UN refugee agency says this week's fighting in Mogadishu, which has killed dozens of civilians, has displaced more than 88,000 people from their homes.

Aid agencies have warned that they can not cope with the unfolding humanitarian catastrophe.

Up to 500,000 people have fled Mogadishu this year because of the battle being waged between Islamic insurgents and Somali forces, which are supported by Ethiopian troops.

Many of the newly displaced are women and children, who are struggling to find food, water and shelter.

Fighting in Somali capital kills at least eight

Nairobi/Mogadishu - Heavy fighting between Ethiopian troops and Islamic militias in the Somali capital Mogadishu Friday left at least eight people dead, the BBC reported witnesses as saying. The dead were said to be five Ethiopian soldiers and three Somalis, including two civilians.

A hospital director said 12 wounded were brought to the hospital Friday, adding that more than 100 wounded have been hospitalized since the fighting began almost a week ago.

The clashes started last Saturday when Ethiopian forces attacked city districts known to be havens for the Somali militias.

The fighting is the latest round in the ongoing chaos and violence which has plagued the Horn of Africa country since the start of civil war in 1991.

More than 40 international aid organizations released a joint statement Thursday concerning worsening conditions for the inhabitants of Mogadishu.

Somalia: Five Ethiopian Soldiers And Two Civilian Die in Fierce Combat in Mogadishu

Seven of which five are Ethiopian soldiers died in a very dreadful battle which was active for hours between the Ethiopian troops and the strongly opposing group in the Somali city of Mogadishu. The fights mainly erupted at the 30th street and around the industrial area.

The skirmish came after Ethiopian troops stormed at some sections of Hodan Holwadag, Wardegley and Yaqsshi districts and in this places the Ethiopian troops faced a very harsh resistant from the other group.

Later on the battle escalated to some other parts of the city. Between Bar Ubah and Black sea the bodies of three people were seen lying on the ground two of the three were Ethiopian troops and the other was a civilian.

Likewise there were some other fights which occurred at Gupta a section of Deynile district and it was as well between the Ethiopian troops and those against their presence.

The corpses of three Ethiopian troops were brought at Bar ubah intersection and placed right in the mid of the junction as the residents of the area told Shabelle.

There were also demonstrations at Bar Ubah against the Ethiopian troops, the people in the area burnt tyres in and along the street of Bar Ubah. The Ethiopian troops went back to the bases, but still sporadic gun shots could be heard.

There were also three explosions at Suqa holaha targeted at Ethiopian troops coming into Suqa holaha, but the damages of those blasts are not manifest as an eyewitness told Shabelle radio.

The conflicts were many today and there was also another battle at Barakat cemetery this battle was also between the Ethiopian troops and the opposing group.

There are no reports regarding the participations of Somali government soldiers in today's battles in Mogadishu.

These combats of today coincide with a time when Banadir administration said that they had stopped operations in the city. It is not yet manifest the reason behind today's combat carried out by the Ethiopian troops. The regional administration of Mogadishu stopped operations after they had received a request from Hawiya clan elders.
