Acording to a United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) 21 September 2007 report, number of asylum seeking Eritreans dropped by 28%. The report is titled "Asylum Levels and Trends in Industrialized Countries, Second Quarter 2007". The report covers 31 European and 5 Non European Countries (Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zeald and USA)
The way the organization came up with the drop figure is that it added all four quarters report for year 2006 and divided it by four and then it took half of it and compared to the total for the two quarterly report for 2007 and came up with the figure of 475.5 less Eritrean asylum applicants for the latest report. In the first half of 2007 number of reported Eritrean asylum seekers in European countries and North America is as follows:
In the same season (first quarter 2007) 1588 Nigerians, 3249 from the Russian Federation, 1868 from Turkey, 7309 Pakistanis applicants were reported. When we compare this against global trends in asylum seekers we get a very good picture what this is all about. In terms of percentile in increase, Pakistan 58%, Iraq 45%, Syria 43%, Sri Lank 14%, Somalia 13%, Mexico 12% more nationals asked for assylum from the six countries in the first six months of 2007 compared to six months average for the year 2006. Canada and the USA reported 3,143 Ethiopians and 979 Eritreans reported for asylum from January 2005 to the end of June 2007. The data Excludes Italy for which no data is available. The Ethiopian government and its willing partners in the international news media for all we care, could keep on spewing disinformation campaign regarding Eritreans fleeing Eritrea. The truth of the matter is what the ICRC or UNHCR are reporting is that more Ethiopians are in fact drowning in crossing the Red Sea to Yemen. This is not to say drowning of any human being, much less Ethiopians is any consolation to any Eritrean other than to highlight the dubious nature of news reporting of the region we are observing coming from news organizations serving governments with an ax to grind against the Eritrean government. At the end of the day,no matter why and how Eritreans choose to leave their country for asylum elsewhere, their participation in the Eritrean military training will serve them well as it did for this writer. |

Letter dated Nov. 30'07 from the Legal Adviser to the President of Eritrea to the president of the UNSC
From `legal nonsense to `legal fiction.

With effect from midnight tonight (30.11.2007), the demarcation of Ethio-Eritrean boundary will be as complete as any demarcated interstate boundary would be, if not better defined.
