ImageThe other day, while listening to National Public Radio (NPR) I almost chocked over my coffee on hearing a government spokes person remark regarding the Pakistani president, Pervez Musharraf’s  recent actions having paralyzed the hands of the USA government  from withdrawing the yearly billions of dollars aid/donation that they bestow on his country for services rendered.

Why paralyzed? You might ask. Well, he continued to say that, since there was not any clause in the agreement between the two nations which stipulated that the said  aid/donations would be withdrawn in the event of the current situation, the USA’s hands remain sort of tied  and bound over what was not mentioned in the agreement, and they would have no choice but to continue giving him the money despite General Pervez Musharraf’s  continued defiance over USA demands.

The American government’s hands tied and bound over the fear of breaching an agreement? That surely is newsworthy and something to take note of!  Since when does the American government, and especially the current one,  respect or care about any signature they signed or any agreement they entered into? With them, is it not always, first and foremost, a case of  national interest, no matter what?  If it were not so, would they not have adhered to, and respected every international law and stopped gallivanting all over the world, breaking every rule and breaching every law under the sun, in order to flex their muscles and bully small nations for no other reason than to dominate, intimidate, and flaunt their power, as well to make sure that no other country competes with them in acquiring the same power?

Truth be told, what really ties the hands of the United States of America and helps keep them at bay from harming General Musharraf, is not any kind of principle, but rather the fact that Musharraf has his loyal army behind him, and most importantly, Pakistan, let us not forget, is in possession of nuclear weapons. As well, they cannot bring his opponent Ms. Bhutto to clandestinely work for them in his overthrow, since, she too has a stake in the matter and is currently engaged in negotiations of power-sharing with President Musharraf.  Otherwise, no signed agreement, or the absence of any clause in any agreement, could have deterred the Americans and their allies from taking drastic measures.

The only weapon and talking points left for Condoleezza Rice’s rhetorical calls to President Musharraf is the subject of  elections, democracy and poor old  over brought up constitution. This too she will have to do with caution. Even the usually aggressive media are walking on eggs, and behaving themselves for once, as they should.

Agh……..Power!  When will you come to Africa?
