Colombo - Sri Lanka has established formal diplomatic relations with Eritrea, the foreign ministry announced Friday. Sri Lanka's Ambassador in Cairo I Ansar and Fassil Ghebresellassie Tekle, Ambassador of the State of Eritrea in Cairo, signed the agreement establishing diplomatic relations on Thursday.
Sri Lanka's Ambassador to Egypt will be concurrently accredited as Ambassador to Eritrea with a residence in Cairo, the statement said. 'Eritrea gained independence on 24 May 1993 and has been an active member of the United Nations. Sri Lanka and Eritrea have been closely working at international fora such as the United Nations and the Non- Aligned Movement since the creation of the State of Eritrea,' the Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry said.

A high level meeting held between the delegations of the two countries during the 61st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Sri Lanka expressed its willingness to expand the existing friendly relations with Eritrea by formalizing diplomatic relations between the two countries on the basis of the Vienna Convention of Diplomatic Relations of 18 April, 1961, a Foreign Ministry statement said. “The Eritrean Government responded positively and it was decided that both Governments sign the Agreement of the establishment of diplomatic relations in Cairo. An Agreement to this effect was signed by the Ambassadors of both countries in Cairo yesterday,” the Ministry said. “Both countries look forward to work very closely and strengthen bilateral relations, particularly in the field of political, economic, cultural and other fields and for closer cooperation between the state institutions in both countries.” On behalf of Sri Lanka, the Ambassador for Sri Lanka in Cairo, I. Ansar and on behalf of Eritrea, Fassil Ghebresellassie Tekle, Ambassador of the State of Eritrea in Cairo signed the agreement. It has been decided that Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Egypt be concurrently accredited as Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Eritrea with residence in Cairo. |
