ImageAlmost a decade ago two of Africa's greatest hopes for the future were building societies to reshape the image of the African. Both nations claimed to encourage civility with one another and the rest of the world; an effort to change the relationship of their continent with the outside world. A new philosophy was born in Eritrea and Ethiopia, aside from embracing the quintessentially African (e.g. love for social justice, etc.), a desire for international tranquility.

This desire came about at the close of bout of the realpolitik no longer practiced exclusively in Europe, but by nations all around the world. In 1998 however, Eritrea and Ethiopia returned to war. Sparked by an ill-defined border, but with far more dubious machinations driving the conflict, it continued as one of the largest land-wars since World War II.

Peace efforts abounded, to no avail for two and a half years. The Eritreans withdrew from their positions in a confidence building measure prior to the signing of a ceasefire, in the meantime Ethiopian troops overran the new Eritrean positions. In Eritrean fashion Eritrea withdrew further into the hills and prepared for a counterattack(Ethiopia and Eritrea, [30 May 2000]. PBS), however ceasefire was finally agreed to. Woven into this conflict are the many pre-existing notions about the historical relationship between Eritrea and Ethiopia.

Until the early 1800's, most of Eritrea was free of Ethiopian control, autonomous, and dealing exclusively with local issues (Killion, Tom (1998). Historical Dictionary of Eritrea. The Scarecrow Press). The paltry measure of control that Ethiopia did exert over Eritrea was mostly in the highland regions of Eritrea. It is a great irony that many Ethiopians today claim that Ethiopia has a historical right to the sea.

This is typically expressed as either a claim to Adulis, or to Massawa. Adulis was the premiere port of the Red Sea, until the fall of the Axumite kingdom 1,000 years ago. Today the silted port of Adulis would be better investigated for archaeological treasures than used as a port. This of course returns us to Massawa. During, Eritrea's struggle for independence from Ethiopian occupation the port of Massawa was a major battleground. This port however, was not even considered by Ethiopia until the late 19th century. By this time it was already under the control of other powers (Holcomb, Bonnie K and Ibssa, Sisai (1990). Invention of Ethiopia: The Making of Dependent Colonial State in Northeast Africa. Red Sea Press).

Furthermore, Massawa had never fallen under the authority of Ethiopia until its federation with Eritrea in 1952. It was after the terms of the federation were violated of course that the Eritreans rejected Ethiopian control and started the struggle for independence. Throughout its history, Eritrea has been a point of contention for other powers, however, today Eritrea is the contender.

Eritrea has morally and legally rejected the ideas of realpolitik and held staunchly to its position that might does not make right, but that right makes might. This has continued to the issue of the Eritrean-Ethiopian border; there cannot be any alteration the Hague decision and as virtual demarcation has now been conducted, and Ethiopian troops have not withdrawn, the occupation has begun.

As the holiday season is upon us, consider that Ethiopia, amongst the poorest nations in the world, receiving millions upon millions of dollars in aid is currently conducting very expensive occupations of its neighbors. The world shook for nearly a decade when Nazi Germany occupied its neighbors, if we cannot learn from the past, it may shake again when Ethiopia does the same

Eritrea is holding a hot iron. It is better to do something about it man. Since you are born here in the US and fed with crap information you would not understand. How do you think the 75M people who are tired of being poor would see this peace of yours?

Hello mr Girma
No body cares about ethiohelloagain or ethiohelloagainn people. it is a matter for the ethiohelloagainns. But as you have seen for the half century ethiohelloagain has been fighting eritreans denying us the right to live in peace. We fought 30 years bloody war. probably our economoy our basic life, our population has been affected by the destruction caused by ethiohelloagain to us. after independence we wanted to live side by side with ethiohelloagain peacefully. the woyanes did not wanted that. they opend the border war which now they telling the world it was not actually a border war. and now are again gearing to open another war against us. they tell us everytime that ethiohelloagain is 70 million now they are telling ethiohelloagain is 80million. they always count their millions only when it comes to war against eritrea. so who do you think is meddling and causing havoc to the horn of africa. What Eritrea is saying that please let live in peace, respecting one a...

conitnues.
Eritrea is giving advice and a warning that is beneficial for Ethiohelloagain. which is lets live side by side in peace. ethiohelloagain does not need to go to war with every one close to it. be eritrea, somalia, and also ethiohelloagain is at war against itself. fight 7 fronts inside ethiohelloagain. It is not good for ethiohelloagain to eat each other. the woyanes never listen to the warning given to them by eritrea. stop medling in Eritrea and somalia. what is happening to ethiohelloagainn soldiers now. they are dead bodies dragged by angry somali women and young people. ther ios nothing humulating than to see the body of a poor ethiohelloagainn soldier being dragged on the street. Eritrea never meddles in your inside afiars. it is giving advice and warning that the quenseqences of such adventure by ethiohelloagain is not good for the region and more to ethiohelloagain. Now stop the gearing to start another war against Eritrea which you starting it on a christmas da...

also mr Girma

Eritreans are building their country. they are making wonders. one eritrean elder siad Eritrea looks like a bride, decorated with every infrustructure, roads, hospitals, schools and roads are in every corner of villages and remote pleaces. Electricity and clean driking water is reaching far villages. there is no village or region that is not connectd with modern roads. we need a lot to do but the achievements so far are splendid. Peoples lives are improving. we are building a country that was destroyed for 50 years by ethiohelloagainn war of colonisation and aggression and occupation. We will do more then we will ask compensation for the 50 years destruction of war from ethiohelloagain. So thank you for your thoughts but we already more advanced than one can think. building the country is contineouse process so we are on the right track.
