Kenya & Ethiopia: Jendayi Frazer, a friend of cheaters Print E-mail

ImageJendayi Frazer, USA diplomat once again stood with the cheaters in Kenya like she did in May 2005 with the Ethiopian regime who stole election by killing protesters in the streets of Addis Ababa who wanted their voices to be heard.

Mr. Raila Odinga the opposition leader called off the planned street protest to pressure the regime to step down and the peoples vote to be respected after he talked to Jendayi Frazer of USA. Similar pressure was exerted by the USA Ambassadors to sabotage Ethiopians right to protest by organizing a meeting with the opposition leaders and we now know that was a big blunder by opposition leaders and they now regret it.

The Kenyan opposition pressured to call off street protest and go to Kibaki's court by Jendayi Frazer is unjust and the millions who voted against Kibaki know that very well and Kenyans opposition are going to repeat what Ethiopians opposition did almost three years ago.

By equating public protest with violence our people’s right to protest is denied and that is good news for African dictators. Denying this right will open a door for armed rebellion and that is why many army officers and young activists are now joining armed resistance in all the corners of Ethiopia.

Jendayi Frazer is also equating the right to raise arms to defend once interest as "terrorism" and I wonder what right she is prescribing for millions whose vote are stolen in Kenya, Ethiopia and somewhere else to do.

Are we going to ask USA to "liberate us" from tyranny? That is not an option if your country has no natural resources like Iraq and on top of that USA military will be stretched doing all these "liberation" with tax payers money because there is not enough money to liberate all of us.

The shortsighted USA foreign policy in the Horn of Africa by standing with the known killers and human right abusers of the region will only force our people to fight for freedom. Jendayi Frazer is working for her country's interest and she care less about freedom and what she achieved on her Kenya's visit is "quite" Kenya to do business for foreigners.

Mwai Kibaki will be in power until he turns eighty years old and the Kenyan people anger that cost 500 people lives will be forgotten soon and tourists will flock to Kenya that is what Jendayi Frazer will call it freedom and democracy, African style.

Under U.S. pressure, Kenyan president invites rival to talks

NAIROBI, Kenya — Kenya's embattled president and his main political rival agreed Monday to meet for the first time since a flawed election last month that a senior U.S. official said had "cheated" the Kenyan people.

President Mwai Kibaki's invitation to opposition leader Raila Odinga came after talks over the weekend with Jendayi Frazer, the top U.S. diplomat for Africa. Kibaki claimed a re-election victory last week despite serious charges of vote-rigging, triggering violent clashes that have killed nearly 500 people, according to a government estimate.

Kibaki's invitation followed days of pressure by Frazer and other Western diplomats on both sides to end the fighting, which has forced more than 200,000 Kenyans to flee their homes.

"The people of Kenya have been cheated . . . by their political leadership and institutions," Frazer, the assistant secretary of state for African affairs, said near the end of an urgent four-day visit to Kenya. "We're saying the only way to restore the Kenyan people's . . . confidence in the system is that political leaders have to stop the violence."

Frazer indicated that future Bush administration support for Kenya — which received more than $300 million in U.S. aid in 2006 — would depend on how the government resolves the crisis.

"It can't be business as usual without addressing that problem," Frazer said.

Kibaki issued his invitation for Friday. An aide to Odinga said that he was willing to meet Kibaki, and earlier in the day Odinga had called off protests to pave the way for negotiations. But diplomats remained doubtful of a speedy resolution because of the deep enmity between the men.

"They don't trust each other very much," Frazer said.

Odinga's support was key to Kibaki's landslide election victory in 2002, and in exchange, Kibaki agreed to share power with Odinga and to serve for only one term. Kibaki's critics say he's instead handed more power to members of his ethnic group, the Kikuyu, whom other groups see as having dominated politics and business in Kenya since independence in 1963.

Since the disputed vote, Odinga supporters from various tribes have targeted Kikuyus, driving them from towns and villages throughout the country with stones, machetes, and bows and arrows.

Frazer said that the events — especially the ethnic dimension of the violence — had shaken U.S. faith in a country that's a key partner in the war on terrorism in East Africa, and which serves as a conduit for humanitarian assistance to southern Sudan and war-torn Somalia.

The problems began with long, unexplained delays in the reporting of election returns from Kikuyu-dominated central Kenya. When they were announced, the number of votes for Kibaki in several areas appeared to have been inflated, according to independent observers.

The election outcome clearly unsettled the U.S. government.

"On Dec. 27 (election day) the U.S. was feeling very, very good about Kenya," Frazer said. "We were quite stunned at how quickly things deteriorated."

Despite allegations of fraud, the election commission, which is packed with Kibaki allies, certified Kibaki as the winner, and he had himself sworn in Dec. 30. Clashes erupted immediately.

A State Department spokesman in Washington initially congratulated Kibaki, but the next day the department issued a statement expressing concern about the vote-counting process, then withdrew recognition of Kibaki's victory.

Opposition rallies scheduled for Tuesday had been expected to draw thousands of supporters in Nairobi, and the government had said it would deploy riot police to prevent the gathering, citing security fears. Police firing water cannons and tear gas at protesters blocked a large demonstration last week.

Odinga said he'd called off the rallies to pave the way for Ghanaian President John Kufuor, the well-respected chairman of the African Union, who was expected to arrive Tuesday and could serve as a mediator.

"We want the mediation to take place in a peaceful environment," Odinga said.

Kenya rivals agree to give ground

Cape Argus & Independent Online (Pty) Ltd.

Kenya's president and his chief rival made key concessions today to end the post-election violence, calling off protests and agreeing to talks as the post-election death toll rose to least 600 people and 250 000 others were displaced.

A top US envoy to Africa said the vote count at the heart of the dispute had been tampered with and both sides could have been involved. "Yes, there was rigging," US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Jendayi Frazer said yesterday in Nairobi, where she has been meeting President Mwai Kibaki and opposition leader Raila Odinga for the past three days.

Kenya is crucial to the US "war on terrorism". It has turned over dozens of people to the US and Ethiopia as suspected "terrorists", allows US forces to operate from Kenyan bases and conducts joint exercises with US troops.

Meanwhile several former African presidents arrived in Nairobi today to try to break a political stalemate over the election.

Tanzania's Benjamin Mkapa, Mozambique's Joachim Chissano, Botswana's Katumile Masire and Zambia's Kenneth Kaunda will be joined later by the African Union chairman, Ghana's President John Kufuor.

Yesterday Kibaki invited Odinga to his residence for a meeting on Friday to discuss how to end the turmoil, the presidency announced.

Odinga's spokesman said the opposition chief would meet Kibaki as long as the talks were part of the mediation process. Odinga said he was willing to drop demands that Kibaki resign and was willing to discuss sharing power. - Sapa-AP-AFP

Both Ethiopia and Kenya are for the last 40 years work for the interest of US & UK administration, this puts people in Kenya and Ethiopia under poverty and low quality life. The governments in both countries just work not for the sack of their people but for the interest of the western especially UK and US. The recent election in Ethiopia and Kenya shows that how the people of these two countries are suffered due to the ill policy of their governments. The election in Ethiopia and Kenya was both undemocratic election. However the US and UK supports the result of the election and tries to block the opposition of the people. The US especially supports such government in order to control the economy of these countries. US administration puts all efforts to crush the opposition in Ethiopia and now again do the same thing. US administration is the first cause for instability in the Horn.
