ImageThe Special Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations on Somalia, Mr. Ahmedou Ould Abdallah, visited Eritrea over the weekend and met with Eritrean officials, including Mr. Yemane Ghebreab, Political advisor to the President.

During the meetings, Eritrea conveyed its position on Somalia to the UN official. Eritrea stressed that the United Nations and the United Nations Security Council have the responsibility to:-

  1. Condemn the illegal Ethiopian invasion of Somalia that was carried out in flagrant violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1725 of 6 December 2006, which prohibited any military deployment of states bordering Somalia;
  2. Launch, as a matter of urgency, an investigation into the war crimes and crimes against humanity, that have been perpetrated by the occupying Ethiopian army in Somalia, in and around Mogadishu and in other localities; and
  3. Provide adequate assistance to the Somali victims of what has been described as the world's “worst humanitarian disaster” throughout the country.

Eritrea also informed the Special Representative of the Secretary General, Mr. Ould Abdallah, that currently there is a regional effort to assist the Somali people and Somali political actors to start a political process that would lead to peace, stability and a functioning government in Somalia.
