9/11: A Blessing in Disguise for Invasion and Exploitation

“Any country, wherever in the world it may maybe, should make its position clear; that it is either with us or with the terrorists.” These are the words of US President George, W. Bush, said in 2001 shortly after the 9/11 attacks. Seven years ago, people all over the world was shocked and appalled when on September 11, 2001 a group of terrorists attacked the Twin Towers in New York and the Pentagon offices in Washington, killing thousands of innocent civilians. The whole world sympathized with the people and government of the United States and condemned the inhumane actions of the terrorists. There was no one who doubted that the US Administration had every right to take whatever measures it deemed necessary against those who claimed responsibility for the attacks. Furthermore, many nations not only supported the US initiative for forming an alliance against terrorism so as to curtail similar attacks in the future but also went on to join the alliance with a promise to contribute whatever they can. However, contrary to what the rest of the world had expected, the US Administration’s counter reaction did not assume a legal route. A handful capitalist individuals who wield power in Washington took the 9/11 attacks as a blessing in disguise and sought to quench their insatiable greed by turning the war on terror into a war for commerce. Consequently, for the past seven years US officials terrorized, attacked and raided nations which had nothing to do with the 9/11 attacks in a bid to secure global dominance and opportunity to exploit world resources. And anyone who dared oppose the adventurous acts of US Administration was labeled as a terrorist. Although using the death of thousands of innocent civilians to secure to gain economic and trade benefits is generally considered morally and ethically repugnant, it is not something unheard of in the United States. The concepts of ‘shock therapy’ and ‘disaster capitalism’ had long since been used in the United States. Any kind of disaster, either man-made or natural in the US is considered as an opportunity to make profit from. In times of tragedy and human loss various companies get the chance to amass a lot of profit and government officials get the opportunity to introduce whatever changes they want in the daily life of the society. Thus, as the rest of the world was appalled by the horrific tragedy of 9/11, the minds of US Administration officials and their capitalist partners were focused only on how to monopolize world resources using military might. Having had ample experience on how to profit from human tragedy, US officials and their partners chose to use 9/11 as a justifiable excuse to invade and attack places they had long wanted to by deploying massive military forces in the name of ‘war on terror’. Profit maximizing corporations and trade representatives were also sent along the military troops to ensure that every potential for capitalization is explored. The people of the world who had empathized with the people and government of the United States in the time of their tragedy had not expected such a reaction. It gradually became clear that US actions that seek to weaken and destroy both the guilty and innocent at the same time were far worse than terrorism itself. Consequently the world’s initial empathy turned into hatred and later on morphed into a struggle against the super power. Hence as the 7th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks draws near, the world remembers not only the appalling actions of the terrorists and the ensuing loss of life but also the crimes committed by the US Administration using the attacks as an excuse.
