ImageThe spokesperson for the Somali Congress for Liberation and Reconstitution, Mr. Zakariah Mahmoud Abdi, disclosed that the Congress has issued a statement condemning the US’ biased policy on Africa and asserted the recent accusations by Ms. Jendayi Frazer, US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, as groundless. Noting that the US wrongfully accused Eritrea of harboring a terrorist, Mr. Zakariah went on saying that it is Eritrea’s prerogative to support the Somali struggle as Eritrea and Somalia share a common historical, cultural and political relationship that goes centuries back.

“The participants stressed that Ms. Jendayi is to be held accountable to history,” the spokesperson further said.

Speaking on the general atmosphere of the congress, the spokesperson noted that despite the complexity of issues raised, the congress is progressing well with extensive in-depth discussions on key issues including the US backed TPLF’s invasion and the atrocities being committed by the regime as well as its violation of the UN and international charters, among other timely issues.

Speaking during a press briefing Mr. Zakariah told reporters that several Ethiopian attacks in a livestock market in Mogadishu resulted in civilian casualties. The aggressions, he said, were made in retaliation to attacks by Somali liberation forces on major TPLF barricades.

In the deliberations held up to Monday September 10, the congress discussed on important issues including the mobilization of public opinion through major campaigns, developing an integrated strategy, and drafting the structure and charter of the organization.

The congress participants are expected to elect a central committee in the coming days and conduct further elaborations on the future government for the country.

The Congress for the Liberation and Reconstitution of Somalia, which opened in Asmara on September 6, has brought together different Somali opposition leaders, senior UIC leaders, clan heads, members of the Somali Diaspora, intellectuals as well as dissident parliamentarians.

Upon conclusion, the congress is expected to set up a liberation organization, which will drive out Ethiopian forces from Somalia and retake power.
