ImageBy mid 2006 a new movement born out of the Somali people’s 15 years of bitter suffering received far more acceptance among the people than the transitional government set up in Kenya in 2004 and was within a few months able to restore relative law and order by driving out warlords from Mogadishu and other areas.

This new development in Somalia came as a shock to all anti-peace quarters and particularly to the US Administration and their agents in the Horn of Africa. To this end Washington and its agents sought to thwart the new movement by presenting it as a dangerous group with regional and global agendas and invaded Somalia in a reckless and hasty measure. It is to be recalled that the Eritrean government had then warned that the invasion was a march into an inescapable quagmire.

ImageToday, nearly two years later, the transitional government that was forced on the Somali people by external forces has done nothing but leave a sad and embarrassing mark in the country’s history. The invasion of a sovereign state that was carried out in violation of international laws and charters was one of the 21st century’s worst war crimes. The transitional government that was installed in power to serve foreign interests failed to gain any acceptance among the people and is now a political corpse being guarded by external forces. Unable to suppress the people’s voice through military might, the US Administration and its agents turned their frustration on the Somali people, killing thousands of civilians and displacing more than 5 million Somalis from their homes. Yet, despite such brutal tactics, the Somali people’s struggle continued to grow strong. It has now become unmistakably clear that only the Somali people could resolve their problems.

Invading Somalia to please its masters, the TPLF regime itself has now become the primary victim of the invasion. Having entered into a quagmire of prolonged war to serve the interests of foreign powers, the TPLF has had to make immeasurable sacrifices in the past two years. The bodies of countless TPLF soldiers line the streets of Mogadishu as a result of the daily and nonstop attacks from armed Somali forces. Although strenuous efforts have been made to replace the overwhelmed and demoralized TPLF troops with peacekeeping forces, no force has been found that is willing to dive into a pit of fire.

Disgruntled by this failure, the US Administration resorted to its old tactics and tried to divide and weaken the Somali people’s movement to no avail. What Washington has failed to recognize is that there is no solution other than accepting and respecting the choice of the Somali people; for it is the choice of the people that has proved a formidable challenge to the US Administration and its agents. The various popular movements in the world in general and the Eritrean people’s struggle which had frustrated super powers such as the US and the Soviet Union in particular are vivid examples of the fact that no force can suppress the voice of the people.
